Domestic Abuse and Family Proceeding Bill
Women’s Aid ABCLN welcomes the Domestic Abuse and Family Proceeding Bill reaching the final stage before the Assembly. Victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse in Northern Ireland have awaited too long for coercive control to become an offence, We are behind the rest of the UK and Ireland in protecting those often most vulnerable in society.
We would like to thank all those involved in getting the Bill this far including the Justice Committee who have worked tirelessly putting victims and survivors at the front and centre of all their work, the Department of Justice and Justice Minister and our colleagues in Women’s Aid Federation Northern Ireland.
We will continue to campaign for a full review of the Family Court, Stalking and Non Fatal Strangulation Legislation, secure tenancies for all victims of domestic abuse and a strategy recognising the gendered nature of domestic abuse. Northern Ireland is the only country within the UK that does not recognise or have a Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy.
