Domestic Abuse: Facts and Figures​
One in four women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime.

Police respond to one incident of domestic abuse every 16 minutes across Northern Ireland.

For every incident we know the impact on women and children can be devastating.

Over 30% of domestic abuse starts during pregnancy.

In 90% of incidents children are in same or adjacent room when violence happens.
In the twelve months to 31st March 2024 there were 32,763 incidents recorded by the police where there was a domestic abuse motivation.
Over this period police record 2,306 domestic abuse incidents in Antrim & Newtownabbey and 2,188 incidents across Mid and East Antrim.

NI Housing Executive figures show on average 12.8% of homelessness cases across Antrim & Newtownabbey are due to domestic abuse, and the worst council area is Mid and East Antrim with 141 cases out of 920 listed as homeless due to domestic abuse or 15.3% of cases.

Since 2020 twenty one women in Northern Ireland have been killed by men.​​

Women’s Aid ABCLN 2023-24

In 2023-24 Women’s Aid ABCLN supported 1,398 women and 723 children living with domestic abuse across Antrim, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Larne and Newtownabbey.

81 women and 42 children stayed in our refuge accommodation.

1,317 women accessed support in the community.

290 women attended groups & courses and drop-in sessions.

Domestic Abuse Specialists provided 3,007 one to one support sessions for women.​
-
Over this period we responded to 54,128 information and support calls.
