Domestic Abuse: The Facts and Figures 

  • One in four women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime.

  • Women are on average assaulted 35 times before they seek help.

  • Over 30% of domestic abuse starts during pregnancy.

  • It is estimated that 32,000 children are living with domestic violence in Northern Ireland (UNICEF 2006).

  • In 90% of incidents children are in same or adjacent room when  violence happens.

  • From April 2019 to March 2020 there were 31,817 domestic abuse incidents reported to the PSNI with 18,640 domestic abuse crimes recorded representing a 15.3%  increase on the previous 12 months and highest since records began in 2004/05.

  • PSNI report there were five murders with a domestic abuse motivation during 2019/20.

  • Domestic abuse represents 17.5% of all police recorded crime.

  • Police respond to one incident of domestic abuse every 17 minutes across Northern Ireland.
