Notes for editors

The need for increased awareness about domestic violence is continuous as seen in the staggering domestic violence statistics published by PSNI 2016/17. During this year 29,166 domestic abuse incidents were recorded throughout NI, representing an overall increase of 2.7 per cent on the previous year and the highest level recorded since the data collection began in 2004/05.

Domestic violence can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, religion or sexual orientation.  Events like the Handbags of Hope give a great opportunity for local people to support those in great need who are living with the impact of domestic violence and ensure that  services continue to be available for those in need.’’
